When the Nationalists fled the Mainland to retreat to Taiwan after having lost the Civil War against the Communists in 1949, they took as many ancient Chinese artifacts and artworks with them as they could carry. Almost 700.000 of these paintings, bronzes, porcelain and other works are now on display in the NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM.
